The “Power” Of Coffee

Most of us recognize the energizing, wake-up character of coffee – but too often we forget its other “power.”

A Power Outage

Connecticut was hit very hard by hurricane Irene.  As I write this there are still half a million people without power and in an area like mine — a lot of homes have well water and no gas source — you may not have water, a working stove – or flushing toilets for that matter.  We have an abundance of trees and outside of my small town’s downtown area most of the power, phone, and cable lines are overhead making us especially vulnerable in any major wind, snow, or rain event.  We have no mass transit other than a Metro North spur line – which is still down for the count. In other words, it can feel like you’re disconnected from the world and functioning within your own little sphere.  Your lifelines become food, water, and your iphone or blackberry (if you can find a place to plug in your charger).

Coffee Shops Act As The Town’s “Water Cooler” And General Store

In my town of 20,000 we do have a Starbucks, a Dunkin’ Donuts and a handful of other coffee shops – and they have become the office water cooler, the town general store, the coffee klatch of times gone by, and the source of an electrical outlet and wifi.  Downtown has power so the coffee shops have power.

Thank goodness the post hurricane weather has been phenomenal.  So, what do you do – you get into your car where you can listen to the radio desperately hoping for an estimate for power restoration (which you don’t get) and go hang out in town at – where else – the coffee shops, or sidewalk benches, or restaurants (especially those with outdoor seating).

By far, the most popular places are the coffee shops.  Yes, the caffeine is a drawing card – but so is the conversation and sharing of war stories while you wait in the line that extends out the door onto the street.  Unshaven men and women without a stitch of make-up smile and converse.  Kids beg for donuts (and in most cases get them ‘cause their isn’t a whole lot of produce to be had  — and who could wash it and/or cook it, anyway).

The Golden Ticket

Our local Starbucks must be breaking all sales records.  It has the golden ticket.  Aside from coffee and bathrooms, it has outdoor space with tables, a lot of seating on chairs and retaining walls, and a major bonus:  wifi and for those in the know – outdoor electrical outlets built into the retaining walls. It is so crowded that you have to launch yourself in the direction of an empty space when someone vacates.

The amazing thing is that everyone is friendly and cooperative.  Tables are shared.  The Starbucks staff, overworked, has been as friendly as ever.  The coffee is flowing – but most importantly, the place itself has reverted to the general store of old – the downtown center – the water cooler in the office.  It is the place to share stories, to connect with humanity, to speculate, to rage at the power company and the cable provider.  It is the place to recharge your mind and to recharge – literally – your cellphone, iPad, and laptop!

So, for those in many towns and cities who sometimes protest the proliferation of coffee shops, or bodegas, or local bars or restaurants – think about what they offer.  It’s not only food and drink but the humanity and kinship that goes along with it – not only during crises but when you stop in everyday for your morning coffee – or your Sunday breakfast at the diner – or your burger and beer to watch the game.  For many of us, these places become part of out social structure – something that is heightened during times like power outages or critical events.

Time To Post

It’s time to get into my car, turn on the radio, drive into town hoping to spot a utility truck working on downed wires, go to Starbucks to get a cup of coffee and an update on power restoration (opinion, true or not), and stake a claim to a perch outside where I can grab on internet connection and post this online.

How Many Calories Are In Your Wine Glass?

Do you love wine with dinner – or maybe a glass of champagne at your friend’s wedding?  What about that wonderful, sweet, thick dessert wine to polish off a fantastic meal?

You may have your preference – most of us do – but whether it’s red, white, dry, sweet, or sparkling, it is really easy to overlook the calories in those long-stemmed glasses.

How Big Is Your Glass?

A standard portion of table wine (red or white) is 5 oz. and contains about 12% alcohol.  A standard portion of fortified wine, such as sherry or port, ranges from 3 – 4 oz. and contains about 17% alcohol.   But how many ounces are really in the glass of table wine that you usually drink?  Probably five to eight!

On average, an ounce of red or white table wine has about 24 calories, so you’re drinking anywhere from around 120 to 200 calories of wine – in one glass!

What About Sweeter Dessert Wines?

If you have a sweeter dessert wine after dinner it’s about double the calories per ounce although the standard serving is less:  usually 3 to 4 oz.  So figure about 140 to 190 calories for each glass.

Calories in Wine:

  • 1 oz. of Champagne:  19 calories
  • 1oz. of red table wine (burgundy, cabernet):  25 calories
  • 1 oz. dry white table wine (Chablis, Hock, Reisling):  24 calories
  • 1 oz. sweet white wine (Moselle, Sauterne, Zinfandel:  28 calories
  • 1 oz. rose:  20 calories
  • 1 oz. port (about 20% alcohol):  46 calories
  • 1 oz. sweet dessert wine:  47 calories

Margarita Or Mojito? Is There A Difference In Calories?

Mid-August.  Time for vacation – and if not vacation, certainly some relaxing outdoor time, maybe with drink in hand.

Could a nice cold (or frozen) margarita or mojito be your drink of choice?  You might opt to go with the tequila, citrus, and salt flavors of a magarita or the rum, lime, and mint flavors of a mojito — but is there a caloric and alcoholic content difference (alcohol has 7 calories a gram) between the two?

Remember to look at the serving size.  The stats given below are for 3.3 and 3.5 ounces – visualize the amount in a little more than two average sized (1.5 oz.) shot glasses.  A whole lot of drinks are served in much larger glasses.  They are the nutritional values for traditional margaritas and mojitos  — without embellishments.

  • Margarita (3.3 fluid oz. cocktail glass):   153 calories, 0g fat, 7g carbs, 4.3g sugars, 583 mg sodium, 0.2g protein, 17.7g alcohol
  • Mojito — without soda water or mint garnish (3.5 fluid oz. old fashioned glass):  149 calories, 0g fat, 5.8g carbs, 4.5g sugars, 1mg sodium, 0.1g protein, 17.9g alcohol

Yankee Stadium Food — 64 Years Ago

These photos were taken at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York which I visited this week.  It’s fascinating how food always seems to be incorporated into museums of any kind.  As a born and bred New Yorker and a life-long Yankee fan I couldn’t pass up these photos.  The same food is still the standard in most ballparks although there are many more choices available, too.  It’s nice to know that vendors tossed bags of peanuts then as they still do now.  Sort of traditional ballpark behavior, isn’t it?

Road Trip? Why Not Roadmap Your Miles And Your Meals?

Planning a road trip?  You know that you’re going to have to stop for a snack or a meal along the way.  Do you leave your food choices to chance?

I drive a lot.  I have three long road trips coming up in the next month. I know that I’m going to stop for a snack or meal —  either because I need gas; I’m bored, stiff, and tired; I’m hungry – or any combination of the above; and, quite frankly, because I love rest stops and truck stops.

The lure of a rest stop can be hard to pass up when you’ve been sitting in the car for hours on end. You walk in and you’re assaulted by an array of vending machines, candy racks, fast food, donuts, coffee, and every bottled drink under the sun. You’re a captive consumer (there’s probably no other place around that you know of to stop other than the roadside rest stop, truck stop, or gas station) – and, you crave something to:

  • Keep you energized and awake
  • Ease the boredom
  • Reward you for endless hours of driving (especially of you have complaining or fighting kids with you)
  • Bring back memories of summer road trip food you had when you were a kid (as a parent I can admit that you often give in and buy all kinds of stuff for your kids because they’re driving you crazy)

The Trap And The Danger

An endless stream of high carb, high fat, high calorie, and processed food is just begging you to plunk down your money so you can immediately indulge (watch how many people start eating the food they’ve bought before they even pay) or to take with you (in case there’s a pending famine).

The real danger – aside from the damage to your waistline – is that the high carb processed foods spike then crash your blood sugar — which ends up making you really tired and cranky.  Drowsy drivers are most definitely not safe drivers.

Cranky drivers make life miserable for everyone in the car – not a great tone to set if you’re going on vacation.

Some Ideas

  • It may take away some of the road trip spontaneity, but when you pack up your car pack some food, too.  Fill a cooler with water, fruit, yogurt, sandwiches, whatever you think you will eat and that will keep you alert and energized (aim for some complex carbs and protein).  Why not throw in some portion sized bags of nuts and popcorn, too?  Planning ahead means you’re not at the mercy of the vending machines and racks and racks of candy, chips, and baked goods.
  • Use an app or your GPS to find nearby restaurants as you drive through various communities. A little searching can help you find places with healthier options than you might find at a rest stop. This can be really helpful for anyone with allergies or special dietary requirements.
  • If you haven’t done either of the above and just want to play it by ear – or pit stop – at least have your own mental list of some good, better, and best choices of food to buy.  The danger is that the candy, chips, fries, and donuts call your name the minute you walk in the door.  If you know that you’re going to head straight for the nuts, or popcorn, or even a burger, that’s great, as long as the giant chocolate chip cookie and the bargain 32 ounce soda for 99 cents doesn’t grab you first. Try to decide what you’re going to buy (hopefully, a good choice) before you go in – and then stick to your decision.
