10 Tips For Eating Well In A Restaurant

  • Research the menu ahead of time either online or in person
  • Choose a restaurant with an accommodating menu
  • Learn the approximate calorie count of the dishes you order a lot
  • Decide, before you go, what you’ll order and stick to your decision

 2. Create your personal cheat sheet of red light and green light foods

  • Understand what words and descriptions should raise red flags
  • Recognize the value of broiled versus crispy – the trouble with stir-fry – and the true meaning of country-style
  • Learn the best types of foods to choose in ethnic restaurants

3.  What’s your plan?

  • Will you have an appetizer or are you going to trade that for dessert? Will you have bread or a second glass of wine?
  • Do your dinner companions always order a multi-course meal and expect you to do the same?
  • What pitfalls might you face and how will you deal with them?

4. Pick – or ask for – a table in a quiet spot

  • People who sit in the more distracting parts of restaurants (by a window, bar, or in front of a TV) eat more. A lot of swirling activity and noise makes it easy to lose track of how much you’re putting into your mouth.

5. Don’t be seduced by mouth-watering descriptions

  • Be particularly aware of descriptions that use sensory terms like “velvety” cheesecake or nostalgic ones like “Grandma’s” lasagna
  • Words that evoke taste, texture, or that appeal to emotions increase sales and influence the way you think the food tastes.

6.  Be the first  — or last — to order

  • If you’ve decided to order grilled fish, when your friend orders a cheeseburger you might have second thoughts. To avoid temptation, order first. If you can’t, close your menu and commit to your choice.
  • Order last if you’re asking for a lot of changes. After everyone else has ordered they’re not interested in listening to your requests. You might get better attention from the waiter with no other questions after yours.

    • How is it dish prepared; can it be grilled instead of fried?
    • What are the sides with the meal; can I have a vegetable instead of pasta/rice/potato?
    • Is it a big portion; can I get it in an appetizer size?

8. Choose meals that are served close to their original state

  • Can you picture what your food was before it landed on your plate?
  • Avoid food smothered in sauce, cheese, or butter
  • Ask for sauces/dressings on the side so you are in control of the amount and can see what’s underneath

9.  Be mindful of portion sizes and be aware of what’s on your fork and going into your mouth

  • Overeating happens because of portion size, who you’re with, where you are, how things look, plate size, aroma, and distractions
  • It’s easy to keep putting food in your mouth when it’s right in front of you – especially if you’re tired, bored, angry, or really starving.
  • If you don’t like it, don’t eat it out of habit or courtesy

10.  Have your own personal bag of tricks – and be ready to use them

  • Sometimes a little white lie about why you’re not eating something is perfectly acceptable
  • If you ask for substitutions or order off the menu, use explanations like  “I need to eat heart healthy” or “I have a severe allergy”
  • Give the food you don’t want to finish to someone else at the table
  • If all else fails, after you’ve eaten what you want, make your food inedible by “accidentally” dumping salt or spilling water on it.

Love Pizza? Here’s 7 Ways To Cut Down On Pizza Calories

pizza, mouth watering pizzaIf your mouth starts watering at the thought of melted cheese and pepperoni or veggies on some kind of crust, take comfort that you fit the stats:

  • American men, women, and children eat, on average 46 slices of pizza a year.
  • 94% of Americans eat pizza regularly
  • In the US, 61% prefer regular thin crust, 14% prefer deep-dish, and 11% prefer extra thin crust
  • 62% of Americans prefer meat toppings; 38% prefer vegetables
  • 36% order pizza topped with pepperoni

Is Pizza Junk Food?

Pizza can be a pretty good food – both in calories and nutrition.  On the other hand it can be pretty lousy – both in calories and nutrition.

It’s difficult to estimate the number of calories and fat grams in a slice of pizza because the size and depth of the pies and the amount of cheese, meat, or other toppings vary enormously.

Here’s the good news: pizza can be a healthy food choice filled with complex carbs, B-vitamins, calcium, protein, vitamin A, and vitamin C and calorically okay if you choose wisely and don’t eat more than your fair share.

The not so good news:  the amount of fat, calories, and portion size. If your mouth starts to water at the thought of golden brown crust and cheesy goodness — here’s the downer:  that luscious slice of pizza that should be about the size of two dollar bills – not the size of a small frying pan or a quarter of a 12” circle.

7 Ways To Build a Better Slice of Pizza

  1. Order thin crust rather than a thick crust or deep dish.
  2. Resist the urge to ask for double cheese — better yet, go light on the cheese or use reduced-fat cheese (if they have it).
  3. Ask for a pizza without cheese but topped with veggies and a little olive oil. You can always sprinkle on a little grated parmesan for flavor; one tablespoon has only 22 calories.
  4. Instead of cheese go for big flavors like onion, garlic, olives but use them somewhat sparingly because of the oil.  And don’t forget anchovies  – a lot of flavor for minimal calories – but you have to like them!
  5. Choose vegetable toppings instead of meat (think about the fat content in sausage, pepperoni, and meatballs) and you might shave 100 calories from your meal. Pile on veggies like mushrooms, peppers, olives, tomatoes, onion, broccoli, spinach, and asparagus. Some places have salad pizza – great if it’s not loaded with oil.
  6. Order a side salad (careful with the dressing) and cut down on the amount of pizza.  Salad takes longer to eat, too.
  7. If you’re willing (and not embarrassed or grossed out), try blotting up the free-floating oil that sits on top of a greasy slice with a napkin. Blotting (it’s easy to do this on the kind of hot slice where the oil runs down your arm when you pick it up) can soak up a teaspoon of oil worth 40 calories and 5 grams of fat.

How Does Restaurant Decor Affect How Much You Eat?

In most restaurants, the décor isn’t an accident — it’s intended to keep you seated at the table longer or to get you to eat and run.

Think about how long it takes you to gobble down a Big Mac or a shortstack of pancakes with bacon.  The red and gold color schemes, noise levels, and general hustle and bustle in many diners and fast food restaurants encourage you to eat quickly – and allows the restaurant to “turn the tables,” or to get another group of people seated at the table you just vacated pretty quickly so they can serve more food and make more money.   The white tablecloths, soft music or hushed sounds  of fancier restaurants make it pleasant for you to linger longer — and order another glass of wine, dessert, coffee, and after dinner drink – from which the restaurant makes more money.

Watch your waistline, too.  According to Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating and director of Cornell’s Food and brand Lab, the atmosphere of a restaurant can get you to overeat in two ways:  if it’s really pleasant you want to stay longer — and therefore order and eat more.  If it’s very brightly lit and possibly loud and irritating you usually gulp and run, probably overeating before you realize that you’re full.

Know your restaurant and its setting:  think about pacing yourself in the speed environment and avoiding the temptation to keep ordering in the relaxed environment.

30 Easy And Doable Eat Out Resolutions To Try — Pick One!

Eating out can be a real challenge to your waistband.  It can be pretty hard to make the best choices on the spur of the moment.

There are times to go all out and eat everything – maybe a special meal or celebration.  But for everyday eating, whether it’s at the coffee shop, takeout for lunch at work, or dinner at the local diner — why not resolve to stick to certain personal rules that are the most workable for you.

Here’s a list of some possibilities – all of them pretty doable – some easier that others depending on your preferences.  If you make up your mind to do one thing – and consistently stick to it – that behavior will eventually become your default habit pattern.

Ideas To Try:

  1. I will not stick my hand in the breadbasket and eat what comes out.I will only have one piece of bread with dinner instead of two or three (harder breads tend to have fewer calories).

Holiday Cheer Can Pack A Big Punch

Holiday toasts and festive drinks are a big part of the holidays and can be a big – and hidden – calorie hit. With a little bit of forethought and planning you can enjoy holiday cheer and still keep your calories and buzz under control.

A standard drink (in the US) is 1.5 ounces of hard liquor, 5 ounces of wine, or 12 ounces of beer (each drink contains about 14 grams of alcohol).

Alcohol, regardless of the type, has 7 calories per gram. It doesn’t register as “food” in your GI tract and brain so it doesn’t fill you up the way food does. You can drink a lot and not feel stuffed (perhaps drunk, but not stuffed).

Is It Safer To Have Beer Or Wine Instead Of A Cocktail?

A 12 ounce bottle of beer has about the same amount of alcohol as a 5 ounce glass of wine or a 1.5 ounce shot of liquor. It’s the amount – not the type — of alcohol in your drink that affects you the most, so it’s not safer to drink beer or wine rather than liquor if you’re drinking the equivalent amount of alcohol.

In other words, whether you have two 5 ounce glasses of wine, two 12 ounce bottles of beer, or two 1.5 ounces of liquor either straight or in a mixed drink – you’re drinking the same amount of alcohol.

Calories In Holiday Cheer

Beer

  • Beer (on average), 12 ounces: around 153 calories (different brands vary significantly)
  • Lite beer (on average), 12 ounces: around 103 calories (different brands vary significantly)

Alcohol And Mixers

The higher the alcoholic content (proof), the greater the number of calories:

  • 80-proof vodka (40% alcohol, the most common type) has 64 calories/1 ounce
  • 86-proof vodka (43% alcohol) has 70 calories/1 ounce
  • 90-proof vodka (45% alcohol) has 73 calories/1 ounce
  • 100-proof vodka (50% alcohol) has 82 calories/1 ounce

Mixed Drinks

When you start adding mixers, the calories in a drink can more than double. For one cup (8 ounces):

  • club soda: no calories
  • orange juice: 112 calories
  • tonic: 83 calories
  • ginger ale: 83 calories
  • tomato juice: 41 calories
  • classic coke: 96 calories
  • cranberry juice: 128 calories

Mixed Drinks

Mixed drinks and fancy drinks can significantly increase the calorie count.    The following calories are approximate – bartenders, recipes, and the hand that pours all vary.  Use these figures as a guideline.

  • Plain martini (2.5 ounces): 160 calories
  • Mimosa (4 ounces):  75 calories
  • Gin and Tonic (7 ounces):  200 calories
  • Cosmopolitan (4 ounces): 200 calories
  • Green apple martini (1 ounce each vodka, sour apple, apple juice): 148 calories
  • Bloody Mary (5 ounces): 118 calories
  • Coffee liqueur (3 ounces): 348 calories
  • Godiva chocolate liqueur (3 ounces): 310 calories
  • Vodka and tonic (8 ounces): 200 calories
  • Screwdriver (8 ounces): 190 calories
  • White Russian (2 ounces of vodka, 1.5 ounces of coffee liqueur, 1.5 ounces of cream): 425 calories
  • Rum and Coke (8 ounces): 185 calories
  • Chocolate martini: (2 ounces each of vodka, chocolate liqueur, cream, 1/2 ounce of creme de cacao, chocolate syrup): 438 calories
  • Hot buttered rum: 218 calories
  • Irish coffee: 218 calories
  • Eggnog, 8 ounces: 343 calories and 19 grams of fat thanks to alcohol, heavy cream, eggs, and sugar (recipes vary)
  • Mulled wine, 5 ounces: 210 to 300 calories from a combination of red wine, sugar/honey, spices, orange and lemon peel

Approximate Calories in Various Wines

  • Champagne, 4 ounces: 76 calories
  • Red wine (burgundy, cabernet), 5 ounces:  125 calories
  • Dry white wine (Chablis, reisling, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc), 5 ounces: 120 calories
  • Rose, 5 ounces: 100 calories
  • Sweet white wine (moselle, sauterne, zinfandel), 5 ounces: 140  calories
  • Port (about 20% alcohol), 2 ounces:  94 calories
  • Sweet dessert wine (tokaji, muscat), 2 ounces:  94 calories
