Is What You Order In A Restaurant Really Your Choice?

Have you ever walked into a restaurant absolutely certain that you know what you want to eat? Then the waiter hands you the menu and asks if you want to hear the specials. All of a sudden your “I’m absolutely certain that this is what I’m going to order” has taken a back seat to the pasta special. Why?

Remember Paul Simon’s song, “Mother and Child Reunion”? According to Simon he “was eating in a Chinese restaurant downtown. There was a dish called Mother and Child Reunion. It’s chicken and eggs. And I said, I gotta use that one.”

Putting aside the popularity of the song, who would think to describe chicken and eggs as a Mother and Child Reunion?

Is What You Order Really Your Choice?

Smart restaurant owners and chefs use creative phrasing and mouthwatering descriptions to describe their food.  They’re using menu psychology to suggestively sell from their menu pages. They use design, placement, and words to direct your attention to key items on their menus so it’s more likely that you’ll notice, remember, and order what they’ve pointed you toward.

Sometimes they highlight their signature dishes, but mostly they want to get you to focus on their high profit margin items — the ones that make them the most money. They aren’t always the most expensive, but they are the most profitable.

There’s nothing wrong with ordering something that’s going to make money for a restaurant, but wouldn’t you like to feel that the selection is purely your choice rather than the restaurant’s?

Menus Target Both Your Stomach And Your Mind

A menu is targeted not just at your stomach, but also to your mind.

Gallup once reported that most people spend an average of 109 seconds reading a menu — a pretty short amount of time. Even if people take longer to really read it — after all, some menus are like encyclopedias — a menu’s design means more than a nice layout. It requires psychology and marketing, too.

It’s in the restaurant’s best interest to really pay attention to its menu – a redesign can improve sales by an average of 2 to 10% — which could mean a significant boost in income.

So, a descriptive phrase like “Mother and Child Reunion” is just one of many ways to influence your choice. The messages are often subliminal, but where menu items are placed, how graphics are used, the way the food and drink choices are described, and even the use of dollar signs — all send you directional signals.

The bottom line is that restaurants hope that their menus — a magical brew of prices; superlative or descriptive words; and varying fonts, sizes, and colors — will play with your brain cells and nudge you toward making the choices they would like you to make.

Tired? Have An Annoying Headache? Here’s A Cheap Cure-All

Are you feeling that 3 o’clock fatigue?  Do you have a kind of niggling but not-quite-full-blown headache?

A glass of water might be a cheap cure-all.

Dehydration Causes Fatigue

Yep – a low water level can make you tired.  Don’t you wish you had a dipstick to measure the water levels in your body – like you measure the level of oil in your car?

Even being mildly dehydrated can slow your metabolism, drain your energy, and make you feel tired.

There are some signs you can look for.  In addition to feeling tired, with mild to moderate dehydration you might also:

  • Have a dry, sticky mouth
  • Be thirsty
  • Not urinate as much
  • Have fewer or no tears when you cry
  • Have dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Be dizzy or lightheaded

About 60% Of Your Body Weight Is Water

Water is the main chemical component in your body and accounts for about 60% of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on it.

You need water for the chemical and metabolic processes to take place in your body; for body fluids like tears, sweat, and urine; to flush toxins out of your vital organs; and to carry nutrients to your cells.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

There’s no easy answer to the question:  “How much water should I drink?”  The answer really depends on many things including:

  • your health
  • your age
  • how active you are
  • where you live

For the average healthy adult who lives in a temperate climate, the Institute of Medicine recommends around 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total water intake a day for men and 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total water intake a day for women.

What’s Total Water Intake?

Total water intake is not just plain water. It includes the plain water you drink, the water in all of your other beverages, and the water in your food. All fluids count toward your daily total.

On average, food supplies about 20% of your total water intake. Many fruits and vegetables — like watermelon, grapes, lettuce, and tomatoes — are 90% or more water by weight. Food from grains like oatmeal and pasta are also hydrating because they swell up with water when they’re cooked.  Even meat is full of water.

Beverages like milk and juice are mostly made of water, too. Even beer, wine and caffeinated beverages — coffee, tea or soda — can contribute, but they shouldn’t be the major portion of your daily total fluid intake. Water is calorie-free, inexpensive, readily available and your best bet.

5 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Valentine’s Day

1. When Did We Start Exchanging Valentines?

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages. The first commercial Valentine’s Day cards in the US were created in the 1840s. British Valentine’s Day celebrations started around the 17th century and by the middle of the 18th century all social classes exchanged tokens of affection or handwritten notes. Americans probably began exchanging handmade valentines in the early 1700s and mass-produced valentines in the 1840s.

2.  Who was Saint Valentine?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different martyred saints named Valentine.  All of their stories emphasize Valentine’s sympathetic, heroic, and romantic appeal.

In one, a priest in 3rd century Rome defied Emperor Claudius’ decree outlawing marriage for young men and continued to perform secret marriages — for which he was put to death. Another story suggests that Valentine was killed because he tried to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. And in another legend the imprisoned Valentine sent the first “valentine” message, a letter, to his jailor’s daughter signing it “from your Valentine.”

Some people think that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate Valentine’s death around 270 A.D.  Others think the Christian church decided to celebrate Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an attempt to “christianize” the pagan Lupercalia, known as the beginning of spring festival.

3.  Why Is The Symbol For Valentine’s Day A Red Heart?

No one seems to be really sure why the heart shape symbolizes love, but there’s some speculation that it might have to do with a rare, now extinct North African plant called silphium which was mostly used for seasoning but also had off-label use as a form of birth control. In the 7th century BC the city-state of Cyrene had a lucrative trade in it and minted coins that showed the plant’s seedpod, which looked like the heart shape we know today. The theory goes that’s the reason the heart shape first became associated with sex and then with love.

But the Catholic Church contends that the modern heart shape became symbolic in the 17th century when Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque envisioned it surrounded by thorns. It became known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the popularized shape became associated with love and devotion.

There’s also a school of thought that the modern heart shape came from botched attempts to draw an actual human heart, the organ the ancients, including Aristotle, thought contained all human passions. It was described as a three-chambered organ with a rounded top and pointy bottom, which might have been the inspiration for medieval artists to create what we now know as the heart shape.

Red is traditionally associated with the color of blood. Since people once thought that the heart, which pumps blood, was the part of the body that felt love, the red heart (legend says) has become the Valentine symbol.

 4.  Where Does “Sweets To The Sweet” Come From?

We have Hamlet’s mother, the Queen (via Shakespeare), to thank. The phrase refers to the funeral bouquets of flowers scattered over Ophelia’s grave (Hamlet’s former flame) — but the candy industry uses it to promote Valentine’s Day candy.

5.  Who Gets And Gives The Most Stuff On Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is the fourth in line for holiday candy sales after Halloween, Easter, and Christmas. 52.1% of people buy cards, the most popular Valentine’s Day gift. Women buy about 85% of an estimated one billion Valentine cards that are sent each year.

Around 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold and a survey by the Chocolate Manufacturers Association showed that 50% of women most likely will give chocolate to a guy for Valentine’s Day.

If you’ve ever wondered who gets the most Valentine’s Day candy and gifts, you might be surprised to learn that kids are the winners getting 39% of all Valentine’s Day candy and gifts. They’re followed by wives and mothers at 36%, fathers and husbands at 6%, and grandparents at 3%.

And, not to overlook other members of our households, more than nine million pet owners buy their pets gifts with the average person spending $5.04 on them.

What Do You Eat When You’re Snowed In?

“Chocolate chip cookies.” That’s what a friend said to me as we waited for our kids to get off of the school bus after early dismissal because of snow.

The snow was swirling and the kids were flinging snowballs and kicking snow at each other as we walked down the street to our houses.  “Why do I always want to bake chocolate chip cookies when it snows?” she asked.

For so many of us, comfort food —  those hearty, soul and belly satisfying, sweet and salty foods — seem be the “go-tos” when we’re housebound (and perhaps stir-crazy). They’re foods that are simple, familiar, and often have emotional ties and pleasant memories, especially of childhood.

What Can You Do When Your Cabin Fever And Calories Reach Stratospheric Levels?

You can do lots of things (including choosing your food very carefully), but sometimes wise choices are just not happening and the trips to the fridge go on and on.

You can try countering with some activity. It can do a lot for your mood and might burn some of those excess calories.

Calories Some Winter Activities Burn In An Hour

  • Having a Snowball Fight:   319 calories
  • Making Snow Angels:   214 calories

Chocolate And Valentines: Like Birds Of A Feather They Stick Together

Why are about 1.1 billion boxed chocolates — that’s about 58 million pounds of chocolate candy — sold in the United States during the week before Valentine’s Day? Why not twizzlers or gummy bears?

What Is It About Chocolate That Makes It The “Romantic” Candy?

Chocolate infatuation began around 2,000 years ago. The higher echelon in the Mayan and Aztec societies infused cocoa beans with water which formed frothy chocolate drinks that were both drunk on special occasions and used as sacrifices to the gods.

Montezuma, the Aztec ruler, was of the belief that chocolate was an aphrodisiac.  He routinely drank it before dallying in his harem, which cemented the association of chocolate with love and romance. Years later there is scientific evidence that the chemical phenylethylamine found in chocolate is linked to feelings of excitement and attraction.

Aztec society also used cocoa beans as money and as gifts. In the 16th century, the Aztec’s reverence of chocolate prompted Christopher Columbus to take some back to Queen Isabella of Spain. The love for chocolate and its mystical powers spread throughout Europe. Chocolate’s power was believed to be so strong that nuns were forbidden to eat it and French doctors used it as a treatment for a broken heart.

In 1822 John Cadbury opened a tea and coffee shop in Birmingham, England and soon began selling chocolates. In 1861 his son Richard created the first heart-shaped box to fill with chocolates for Valentine’s Day. This year more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold.

Chocolate: The Good And The Not So Good

A pound of milk chocolate has 2300 calories, 140 grams of fat, 270 grams of carbohydrates, and 31 grams of protein. Although a lot has been said about chocolate’s heart healthy benefits, it’s still a high calorie, high fat food.

Isn’t Chocolate Good For Me?

In moderation—and, depending on the type—the answer is yes, although there is no “prescribed dosageamount.” The health benefits of chocolate come from cocoa, and dark chocolate has a greater concentration of cocoa than milk chocolate.  White chocolate, without any cocoa in it, is not really chocolate.

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, contains flavonols which have antioxidant qualities and other positive influences on heart health.  But Valentine’s chocolates are often not high quality chocolate and are moderately high in fat, one-third of it the type of saturated fat that isn’t heart healthy. Extra ingredients like crème and caramel fillings can add lots of extra fat and calories.

Oh Those Calories:  Valentine’s Hearts And Kisses

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a treat of some Valentine’s chocolate.  A whole box might be a different story!

Here’s an idea of what the calories might be in some of the more common Valentine’s chocolate:

  • Hershey’s Kisses, 9 pieces:  230 calories, 12g fat
  • Hershey’s Special Dark Hearts, 5 pieces:  220 calories, 7g fat
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts, snack size:  170 calories, 10g fat
  • Russell Stover boxed chocolates, 2 pieces:  150 calories, 4g fat
  • Dove Dark Chocolate Hearts, 5 pieces:  210 calories, 13g fat
  • Godiva boxed chocolates, 4 pieces:  210 calories, 12g fat
